What is the price of milk in the shops in England and Wales?
Grocery prices in England and Wales, from Office for National Statistics. An official figure as of 31 August 2026.
An official average or median published by a statistics office or regulator, not individual sales.
£1.75 per 2272 ml (4 pints), median
In the United Kingdom the median shop price of "Whole milk, fresh, 2272 ml (4 pints)" was £1.75 in August 2026 (half of the prices ran from £1.65 to £1.75; mean £1.87; ONS consumer price index data from price collectors and retailer scanner data, not receipts). ONS advises against comparing these monthly figures with other months, so no change on a year earlier is given. Official median published by Office for National Statistics (ONS) for 2026-08.
- Reference period
- 2026-08 (the period the publisher states for this figure)
- Kind of figure
- An official median published by Office for National Statistics. It is passed on as published: no range of ours, and no count of records unless the publisher gives one.
ONS labels these official statistics in development. They describe the prices used to calculate CPI (retailer scanner data, about half of the grocery market, plus local price collection), not every price in the market, and ONS advises against comparing months.

Where this comes from
- Source
- Consumer prices: price level distributions of grocery products, published by Office for National Statistics (ONS)
- Licence
- Open Government Licence v3.0. The ONS terms say: "Most content on this website is subject to Crown copyright protection and is published under the Open Government Licence (OGL). Some content is exempt from the OGL – check the list of exemptions. Reproduction of information is subject to the terms of the OGL and the UK Government Licensing Framework." The OGL v3.0 lets you "exploit the Information commercially and non-commercially for example, by combining it with other Information, or by including it in your own product or application", and asks that you acknowledge the source, by default with: "Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0." The dataset's own page declares the OGL v3.0.

- Figures as of
- . This page is rebuilt when the daily price library is deployed.
- How fresh the source is
- Monthly: ONS publishes each month's file about three to four weeks after the month ends (August 2026 appeared in late September); our copy is refreshed daily and each answer states its reference month
- Limits
- One pack size per product type; the median, quartiles, lowest and highest are weighted summaries of the prices used for CPI (retailer scanner data covers about half of the grocery market, plus local price collection), not every price in the market, and ONS warns they are likely to be biased as population measures. ONS says the monthly files should not be compared with each other (products, retailers and volumes change from month to month), so no change on a year earlier is given. Regional figures are not published where fewer than ten observations stand behind them. ONS labels the data official statistics in development, not Accredited Official Statistics. No count of observations is published.
- Rule
- A figure built from records is shown only when at least 5 records sit behind it; official statistics are shown as such, with their reference period. See how we earn trust and the method.
